Overview

URL Switch makes it possible to open URLs using voice commands and Alexa routine. This means, you can call web links with Alexa, IP addresses can be used as well. With URL Switch, you can open URL either with voice commands or in Alexa routines.

Restrictions of URL Switch

Currently, URL Switch has a number of technical restrictions:

  • You can use fully qualified domain names (FQDNs) as well as IPv4 and IPv6 address.
  • Domain names must be publicly registered and available through the public domain name system (e.g., through nslookup). It will be checked if the domain name you provided is associated with a valid, public IP address.
  • Both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses can be used.
  • Only public (unicast) IP addresses can be used. Private addresses, link local, broadcast addresses and other reserved or special IP addresses cannot be used. I.e., private IP addresses such as 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x cannot be used.
  • Only ports 80 (HTTP) or 443 (HTTPs) can be used. I.e., all other ports cannot be used at the moment. This is a security restriction of our infrastructure provider in the background.
  • Authentication mechanisms are not supported at the moment. I.e., only publicly available web resources can be used.
  • Any URLs pointing to virtualsmarthome.xyz are not permitted.
